Detroit 6 Day - DAY 1
Hughes, Laughton win
Tuesday 19th of August 2003

Day 1 of the first Detroit 6 Day in more 30 years started with a thrill as Jon Hughes and partner Nick Laughton ripped up the boards at the Velodrome at Bloomer Park in Rochester Hills, Michigan.

Just two points put Hughes & Laughton ahead of Ronnie Sink and his partner Michael Bauhof, who chased down several attacks by the winning team. Hanging tight was Dave Koesel, teamed with the newest Velodrome racer, 18-year-old Christopher Hughes, brother to the winner.

Hughes and Laughton won the night with a strategy of taking advantage of every opportunity. If Hughes went in fresh on riders at the end of their rotation, he attacked. Laughton utilized a surprising powerful kick to jump out of the field and pull away, a move made several times with success.

Racing continues on Wednesday, Aug. 20. The event is presented by the NAS-TRACK Madison Racing League and utilizes a round robin “Americanized” formula to switch teams daily and calculate winners. There will be two individual winners -- one from Division A and one from Division AA. Points accumulated over all six days will determine the winner of each division.
