NAS-TRACK INTERNATIONAL 3 DAY
Velodrome at Bloomer Park, Rochester Hills, Mi. USA

Friday August 3rd – Story/Results/Standings

9 Teams representing 9 Velodromes in a 3 Day Madison Tournament!

Unbelievably FAST!

The NAS-TRACK races began with each partner riding in a 1 Mile scratch race.
Team Orange Daniele DeFranceschi outsprinted Team Black Austin Carroll with Team Red Luke Winger closing in for third. The second event was another 1 Mile Scratch for the other partners. Team Black won again, Dan Vogt edged out Team Purple Kevin Suhr for first with Team Neon Luke Cavender closing out third.

So the stage was set. Five teams were already duking it out.

Next up was the first Madison of the Tournament, a 60 lap/8mile Madison with three sprints.

The speed was fast and I mean FAST. The first sprint was won by Team Purple Ryan Luttrell followed by Team Black then Team Red then Team Orange.

The second sprint was won by Team Black followed by Team Purple, Team Red and Team Orange.
The third and final sprint of the first Madison was again taken by Team Black followed by Team Orange and Team Red.

So after the first two 1 Milers and the first Madison – Team Black Austin Carroll and Dan Vogt had a commanding lead with 46 points. Team Red Brian Crosby and Luke Winger along with Team Purple Kevin Suhr and Ryan Luttrell were tied by second place with 34 points. Team Orange Danielli DeFrancesci and Dave Byer were close behind with 30 pts and Team Neon Jarred Facisjewski and Luke Cavender were still in contention with 22pts.

Next up the - spectator friendly – Miss & Out.

After pulling out riders every other lap it came down to a three up sprint between Team Orange Daniele DeFranceschi and two Team Black riders – Austin Carroll and Dan Vogt.
Although Team Orange won the sprint quite handily and gained valuable points, Team Black place both riders in the final sprint off and gained lots of points putting them in a commanding lead with 71 points. Team Red and Team Orange were battling for second with 55pts and 49pts respectively. Team Purple and Team Neon had 39 and 29pts for fourth and five places in the standings.

But everyone knew that the final 100 Lap Madison would determine the night’s winner.

Five sprints with double points on final sprint meant that a lot could change. Then of course, a Team could take a lap and gain an extra 15 points.

Team Orange Dave Byer and Danielli DeFrancesci powered to win the first sprint.
Team Neon Jarred Jaciszewski and Luke Cavender won the second sprint.
Team Red Brian Crosby and Luke Winger won the third sprint.
Team Black won the fourth sprint gaining more points.

And then the unbelievable happened!

Team Purple Kevin Suhr blasted over the top of the field and opened up a huge gap and then threw in his partner Ryan Luttrell who just flat out motored away. Within a few laps the field broke up but that didn’t stop Team Purple from gaining the lap on everyone. Team Purple was back in the hunt. Everything was coming down to the final double points final sprint.

With 3 laps to go the speed was incredible. With 2 laps to go the contenders were setting up their final exchange.

But Team Black missed an exchange with a 1 ½ to go which confused the field and both Team Orange riders collided with Team Black relief rider and all three went down. Bad luck for all three riders (who were OK) but especially for Team Orange as they were out of the points for the final sprint.

Team Purple won the final sprint followed by Team Black and Team Red.

DAY 2 - Saturday August 4th – Story/Standings

8 Teams representing 9 Velodromes in a 3 Day Madison Tournament!

FAST and FURIOUS!

Team White Daniele DeFranceschi came back strong after missing the chance to finish the final sprint of

Day 1 – he won the first 1 Mile Sprint race of the night.  Team Black Austin Carroll continued to show his strong form and added more points to their overall lead by winning the second 1 Mile Sprint.  Team Pink Tony Bruley was nipped at the line but held onto second over Team Purple Brian Crosby.

Next up was the 8 Mile Madison with three sprints.

Team White Daniele DeFranceschi & Dave Byer took first over Team Neon Jarred Faciszewsik & Luke Cavender.

Team Red Brian Crosby & Luke Winger beat the hard charging Team White for the second sprint points.

Team White won the final sprint over the overall leader Team Black Dan Vogt & Austin Carroll.

So Team Black was still in a strong overall position going into the Miss & Out.

But both Team Black riders were eliminated earlier than expected giving opportunities to the other contenders.  Although Team White Daniele DeFranceschi won the Miss & Out, the top points winning team was Team Neon Luke Cavender & Jarred Faciszewsik with 21 pts, followed by Team White with 18 pts and Team Purple Kevin Suhr & Ryan Luttrell and Team Red Brian Crosby & Luke Winger tied with 14pts.  All the contenders moved up in points to overall leader Team Black.

The Final Race of the Night: the 15 Mile Madison with 6 sprints and lots of points.

1st sprint was won by Team Purple Kevin Suhr and Ryan Luttrell followed by Team Black and Team White.

2nd sprint was won by Team White followed by Team Red and Team Neon. So the gap was slowly closing between Team Black and Teams White, Red & Neon.  Team Purple also a strong contender followed behind Team Black so they didn’t move up on points.

3rd sprint was won by Team White followed by Team Purple & Team Neon.  Team White continued to add points and now so did Team Purple.  They were closing the gap.  Team Neon continued to show they were worthy of the completion – young but fearless and fast.

4th sprint was again won by Team White but this time Team Black was right there for second with Team Purple followed by Team Red and Team Neon.

Things had been fast and furious the whole night with only Team Black, Purple, White, Red and Neon on the same lap.  But then Team White put the hammer down and all the contenders were pushed to their max.  The result was Team Black lost a lap and then so did Team Neon.  The overall lead now could change in the final sprint of the night.  The next 2 ½ miles of Madison racing would determine if we had a new leading Team.

The intensity and speed of the closing 20 laps was unblieveable.  With 5 to go Team White looked poised to win the final sprint with it’s double points. Team White Daniele DeFranceschi was leading the train getting ready to throw his partner Dave Byer and expecting one more exchange so he could contend and win the final sprint.  But confusion showed on his face as his partner missed the exchange which meant he had to take a double pull. But things still looked good as his partner would be a little fresher.  With a perfect final exchange Team White Dave Byer had a gap going into the last lap but out of nowhere Team Black Austin Carroll blasted over the top and won the final sprint and Team Purlple Ryan Luttrell pedaled through to the finish line and nipped Team White for second.

NAS-TRACK RACING! CAN IT GET ANY CLOSER!

The Top 2 Teams are only 3 points apart.  The Third place Team is only 5 pts from 1st Place.  And the fourth Team probably would be leading if they hadn’t crashed in Day 1.

Day1/2 Overall Results:

1st - Team Black – Austin Carroll and Dan Vogt – 201 points

2nd – Team Purple – Kevin Suhr and Ryan Luttrell – 199 pts

3rd – Team White (color/change) – Daniele DeFranceschi and Dave Byrd – 196pts

4th –
Team Red – Brian Crosby and Luke Winger – 182pts

5th - Team Neon – Jarred  Faciszewsik and Luke Cavender – 148pts

6 th – Team Pink – Rick Denman and Tony Bruley – 85pts

7th – Team Green – Kelly Sparks and Chris Mosora – (21)pts

8th –
Team Blue – Andre Champoux and Brendan Benson – (56) pts

“AA” riders rode a 2 Mile Sprint, Miss & Out and a Madison – a special salute to our two women who ride in the “AA” Madisons – Rene Schroeder and Maija Orabi.

DAY 3 - Sunday August 5th – Story/Final Standings

8 Teams representing 9 Velodromes in a 3 Day Madison Tournament!

RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY & IT DID!

With fifteen minutes before start time the sky was grey, the track was wet and it was still misting.

But at 2:01 the track was dry and the program would begin in 20 minutes as riders prepared to get ready and warmed up.  The program was slightly modified to insure that the winning team would be determined in a Madison not a 1 Mile Sprint.  So the final program began with a 120 lap Madison, then a Miss & Out and finished with another 120 lap Madison.

With four teams in the hunt to win the 3 Day, three of them only 5 pts apart the bell to start the Madison was the signal which ignited those teams into an unbelievealby intense jam.  Everyone wanted those first place points from the first sprint of the night.

Now the teams that tangled in Day 1  (Team Black and Team White) were now hammering at the front of the train and when the first sprint came down Team White Daniele DeFranceschi and Dave Byer crossed the line for first place points with Team Black Austin Carroll and Dan Vogt close behind for second – they still were in the overall lead as their closest challengers Team Purple Ryan Luttrell and Kevin Suhr finished third followed by Team Red Brian Crosby and Luke Winger and Team Neon Jarred Faciszewski and Luke Cavender.

The second sprint finished the same as the first with Team White winning followed by Teams Black, Purple, Red and Neon.

Team White was the only team closing the gap with Team Black.  Team White was now in second place overall and only 1 pt behind Team Black.

The third sprint showed the smart riding and good form of Team Red Brian Crosby and Luke Winger.  Team Red charged over the top of field and opened a gap and finished first followed by the hard charging Team White, Team Purple, Team Neon and caught in traffic Team Black.  Team White now held the overall lead by 2 pts over Team Black with Team Purple only 2 pts behind Team Black.   Only three more sprints left in the 3 Day.  3 teams battling it out and the fourth team coming on very strong.

The fourth sprint was furious with Team White adding to their lead followed by Team Purple, Red and Neon.  Team White now had a 6 pt lead over Team Purple with Team Black moving down to third.  And both Team Red and Neon were closing the gap on Team Black’s third place.

With 6 to go before the next sprint Team Black Austin Carroll was really cooking and in a moment of “Oh Crap” missed his partners exchange and touched wheels with another rider and went down.  Thank goodness for our flexible apron and grass  which absorbed some of the impact.  He was OK but shaken up.  Team Black Dan Vogt was assigned to go in and out with Team Purple Ryan Luttrell and the charge for the sprint points continued.  Team Purple now was flying and captured first place followed by Team Black Dan Vogt, then Team Neon and Team Red.  But race officials relegated Team Black 3 places because he entered the race ahead of his assigned rider Team Purple with only ½ lap to go. Still a great effort by Team Black Dan Vogt.

Now the question was: Can Team Black continue?  Team Black Austin Carroll was up and walking but  had bruised his right hip.

Next up: MISS & OUT

Team Black Austin Carroll started the Miss & Out and was not the first rider pulled but you could see that he was riding with discomfort to say the least.  Team White Daniele DeFranceschi  took first place and padded their overall lead.  But amazingly Team Black Dan Vogt beat out Team Red and Purple for second place.  Team Black was still in the hunt.

Final Madison of the NAS-TRACK INTERNATIONAL 3 DAY:

A daring move by Team Neon Luke Cavender saw him open a big gap and with a nice exchange with partner Jarred  Faciszewski charged to get a lap and to the surprise of the field they gained it before the first sprint and even got 4th in the sprint.  It was Team Pink Rick Denman and Tony Bruley who moved to the front at the precisely right time to position them for the first sprint but Team White Daniele DeFranceschi and Dave Byer edged him out at the line with Team Pink holding onto second over a hard charging Team Red Brian Crosby and Luke Winger.  Team Neon got fourth followed by Team Black and Purple.

The second sprint was won by a great move by Team Neon Jarred Faciszewski and finished off nicely by his teammate Luke Cavender.  Team Purple Kevin Suhr and Ryan Luttrell got second followed by Team’s Red, White and Pink.  Team Black got caught in traffic finished 7th.   Things were not looking good for Team Black.

The third sprint was dominated by the speed and positioning of Team White Daniele DeFranceschi and Dave Byer.  Teams Red and Neon finished in that order and seemed to be getting stronger.  Team Purple with the best chance to battle with Team White got caught in traffic and finished fourth.

The fifth sprint was a repeat of the fourth sprint. Team White, Red, Neon & Purple.

Now Team Purple Kevin Suhr and Ryan Luttrell’s focused changed.  They needed to gain a lap. They needed to break Team White.

They attacked, attacked and attacked.  The intensity of the racing was nerve wrecking.  But Team White didn’t break and in fact dominated the final sprint followed by a strong ending by Team Red with Team Purple and Neon finishing strong.

> Rochester Hills, Michigan: NAS-TRACK Team Racing attracted more new riders and red became color of victory on Friday, July 6 with five 2-man teams contesting the A races and four 2-person teams competing in the AA category. The action took place on the 44 degree banking of the 200 meter Velodrome at Bloomer Park in Rochester Hills, Michigan.

> "A" Team Racing

> Canadians Jamie Shankland and Lorne Falkinstein, both regulars at the Forest City Velodrome in London, Ontario, teamed up with their fellow countrymen Danielli DeFrancesci (with Shankland) for Team Red and Rob Good/Team Blue to challenge the all-American pairings of Luke Cavendar and Nick Laughton as Team Neon, Terry Palmer and Brendan Benson as Team Purple and John Sammut and Nick Bayma as Team Black.

>

> The tightest competition came between Cavender and DeFrancesci as the 19-year-old from Troy worked hard in his drive to get his first NAS-TRACK win of the season. However, from the beginning Team Red controlled the points, winning both 1 mile sprints then coming on strong in the first 50 lap Madison by lapping the field along with Team Neon. As the Miss and Out began, there was only a three point difference between the two teams. Team Neon struggled to gain control and kept close to the leaders several times, close enough to keep a win within reach.

>

> With the final sprint of the final Madison approaching, Cavender and Laughton, both excellent sprinters, were setting up perfectly to take on DeFrancesci, a dominator in the sprints all night. Neon's six point deficit could have easily been overcome with a final sprint win and the double points that come with it. But a miscue between the pair put Cavender into the final sprint at the end of a double rotation and that was that. DeFrancesci finished with a flourish and took first place. Third went to Team Purple, followed by Team Black in fourth and Team Blue in fifth.

> Two big guys were the big winners in the AA racing when Chris Hughes and Craig VonSeeger were paired together as Team Red. Although Team Neon Doug Hedges won the 2 Mile Sprint, Team Red collected more points by coming in second and third. Team Red then won the first two sprints in the Madison putting them in a very strong position. Team Neon's Doug Hedges and Maia Orabi fought back and broke out of a second place tie with Team Green Dave Hicken and Bruce Carlson, to challenge Team Red in the final sprint and win it. Team Neon picked up double points with the win but it wasn't enough to overcome Team Red's lead.

> Rochester Hills, Michigan -- Ten teams competed in NAS-TRACK#2 on Friday Night June 29th, 2007 at the Velodrome at Bloomer Park in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Eighteen men and two women, five A teams and five AA teams, took to the boards for 2 hours of elbow-to-elbow competition that thrilled spectators with five-riders high in the 44 degree banked turns and close sprint finishes.

>

> A Racing

> 1-Mile Sprints

> The stage was set with the first A races, the 1 mile sprints. Five teams competed but two gained early dominance when Team Neon's Luke Cavender won the first 1 mile sprint and Team Red's Danielli DeFrancesci winning the second.

>

> 6 Mile Madison

> Riding immediately into the first 6-Mile Madison, Team Red of DeFrancesci and partner Rob Good established a lead by winning all three sprints. Cavender and partner Ryan Crawford earned points with two seconds and Team Purple's Nick Laughton and Mark Freed also taking a second place finish.

>

> Miss & Out

> In his first Miss & Out on the boards, Brandon Benson worked with partner Nick Bayma as Team Blue to move up in the standings, but once again Team Red's power gained the most points. Blue followed with Neon close behind in M&O points.

>

> 10 Mile Madison

> Looking unbeatable with 60 points, DeFrancesci and Good as Team Red were met head on by a win-hungry Team Neon that took the first sprint, putting Red in second and Team Purple in third. Team Blue won the second sprint with Team Neon placing second and points leader Team Red placing a distant 4th.

>

> In the third sprint, the finish order was Team Neon, Team Purple and Team Red. Team Neon was gaining ground and closing the gap quickly.

>

> Going into the final sprint, there was a mere two point difference between Team Red and Team Neon and double points were up for grabs. With four to go, Neon's Cavender attacked and gained a winning distance. He threw in Crawford to hold for the final 3 laps, a long 3 laps at warp speed at the end of a race night. Then, Red’s Rob Good burst out of relief with unbelievable acceleration and almost caught Neon. With the precise timing of his experience, he threw in DeFrancesci with 11⁄4 laps to go for the perfect location to dominate the Final Lap.

> 2 Mile Sprint won by Team Orange Doug Hedges. Extra points were scored by Team Neon’s Mai Obai and Ed Gostin both scoring points.

>

> 5 Mile Madison. Halfway sprint won by Team Neon Mai Obai. The action was fast and close. One of the most exciting finishes of the night was the battle for the final sprint. Team Teal was in the lead when Chris Hughes threw in Rene Schroeder with three laps to go. Could Rene hold out that long. ( Not many people knew she was in the hospital only 2 weeks earlier). Team Neon vetern Madison rider Ed Gostin threw in his parter and new comer Mai Obai with a lap and half to go. Rene had a lead. Could the fresher Mai beat her to the finish line.
